Read, Write & Answer the Room- The Newest Classroom Hit

At one of my last staff meetings we took a different approach where questions were posted around the room. It was really similar to a gallery walk. With a few differences:
a) We couldn't talk...probably because we know teachers are the best listeners in the world.
b) We had to write our answers on sticky notes then post them on the question board.
c) Then we went around to each question again and rearranged the sticky notes with the best answers being placed closest to the answer. This time we could talk.

Anything where I can get students moving and learning is something I am willing to try in my room. So I adapted it. I set up mine so
a) Posters are all over the room- on the walls, tables, bookshelves, sides of file cabinets
b) Each students needs to use a marker
c) Students can't talk. They get the max of 1 minute to write their answer.
d) Music plays when they are at a poster. When it stops it is time to move as group to the next poster.
e) When the group return to their first poster- they study the answers and add anything they think is missing.

Here we are busy at work:
Sorry don't mind my finger in the photo.

Then we come back together as a class and each group shares their poster. I have done it so far as a way to introduce our Animal Adaptation Unit in Science and as a way to review the key information from our Michigan Geography Unit.

Honestly, it has worked wonderful! Every student is engaged and gets to share their thinking by writing and then talking with their group. I get so much more information then I would from a discussion or worksheet. After the first time students asked to do it again tomorrow. It is something they look forward to. This is the result of our social studies walk. Love how they had so many ideas they filled the papers.
I do want get students to use sticky notes, but I want them to get the routine of this strategy down first. What are some of your favorite class activities?
