We have been busy with fractions and shapes and with a few snow days throw in the mix we needed some projects to review our skills.
My math group understood fractions of a set and counting shaded circles in a row of circles. That got old so we mixed in an interest of theirs- geography and flags. We did a search to study flags and used some flags I created for my Race for Gold math packet.
We looked at the designs and the colors including how much of a color there was and how much space a shape took up. We used fractions to describe both shapes and colors. For example with Italy's flag we decided it is 1/3 green, 1/3 red and 1/3 white. We decided Japan was 1/3 red or the circle was 1/3 of the flag.
Then they got their chance to design their own flags. They also had to use two or more fractions to describe their flags. As you can see they did a wonderful job and got creative. There was even a Katy Perry flag and I am so sorry I didn't take a picture of that.
We are starting to study shapes in greater depth including making tessellations. Here is a freebie to help students plan out ideas for making a larger tessellations. Click above or on the picture.

What a cool idea to use flags for fractions. I never would have thought of that in a million years but love the real-world application of it. Your kiddos' flags were very creative! :)
