I am sharing a post about our field trip to Tendercare. The purpose of the field trip was to bring some holiday cheer to people in the community. Onto the Throwback post:
WARMING HEARTS WITH HOLIDAY CHEER
Seriously these last few weeks have been a whirlwind. I have made many attempts to come on here and post, but have obviously failed. Just when I wanted to come share the great projects we have going on my camera dies, but alas finally I have my act together. (At least enough to post on here).
I have been inspired by these random acts of kindness people are doing. First time, I saw it was The Birthday Project which inspired me to complete 25 RAOKs in honor of my cousin. Check it out if you haven't seen it yet. It is amazing!!! So after the high (and honestly that it is what it feels like) I wanted to do it with my students. I was puzzling over ways to do this- from handing out items to people downtown (this is possible in the small town we are in, to sing carols, helping out at some store or event). Finally after pondering til my puzzler was sore (sorry, I love the Grinch) and talking with my fellow first grade teacher and principal, we decided to travel to the local Tendercare where each of our classes would sing Christmas carols, pass out Christmas cards, and make a Christmas craft with their residents. Perfect!!
That field trip was last Friday. It was amazing! My group of firsties were more than a little nervous. The first person they saw only had one leg- not too shocking unless you are 6. My students stood as close to walls as they could, but they were smiling. One of my guys told me "They are like zombies." I understand this thought can be pretty frightening. My class put on their bright smiles, did a fantastic job singing, handed out their cards while saying Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, and made wreaths with the residents. Some of our first graders even were helping the residents and ended up with two or more wreaths. Each one of them received cookies and juice while creating smiles and spreading holiday cheer to people who greatly enjoyed our visit. At the end of the trip, that same student that thought I had surrounded them with zombies told me, "That was the best field trip. I had SO much fun and really liked helping that lady. Can we come back?" Warmed my heart because that is what this trip was all about and even if he was the only one who got that or at least told me it was definitely worth it!!!!
Here is the elf application I had my students fell out prior to going. I was stressing that we had a job to spreading holiday cheer. If you would like a copy for yourself click here.
